Guwahati, Nov 6: The Garo Sahitya Sabha (GSS) has sought for promotion of Garo language under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in Assam.
While it expressed its gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the recognition of Assamese as a classical language, it also highlighted the Garo community’s cultural heritage, noting that the Garos belong to the Mongolian ethnic group and are primarily Garo language speakers, with Garo being used as a medium of instruction up to Class VIII.
In a statement on Wednesday, GSS general secretary John Carry Sangma said, “We hope that the Garo language medium would be extended up to the Higher Secondary level, emphasizing the need to uplift Garo-medium education beyond the current level.”
On October 4, the Union Cabinet recognized Assamese language as one of the six classical languages of the country.
