Guwahati, June 12: Assam government has announced a stipend scheme to fight against early marriage of girls’ students.
The stipend will reduce the burden on the parents to a large extent. The responsibility of girls’ education is on the shoulder of the government now, stated Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed a press conference on Wednesday after a Cabinet meeting. He said that “Assam government has initiated a scheme to fight against early marriage of girls students and to inspire them to continue with the education up to the post graduate level. Under the scheme the girls’ students who join higher secondary first and second year, they will get monthly stipends of Rs 1000 from the government. The girls’ students who will get themselves admitted in degree courses will get Rs 1250 per Month from the government. Those who are pursuing post-graduation, they will get Rs 2500 from the state government every month. The students will receive the amount on the 11th of every month.

The initiative is to put a curb on child marriage. The state government wants to make Assam child marriage-free by 2026. The National Family Health Survey reports that 31.8% of women in Assam were married before the age of 18. The government has made arrests and allocated funds to prevent child marriage. 219 people were arrested from the district over the course of a few days in an unprecedented crackdown on child marriage in the state.
Through the scheme we want to prevent child marriage in Assam, and we want to take the responsibility of girls’ education, he further stated.
