Guwahati, Feb 8: In a significant development aimed at enhancing the management of secondary education, the Assam government has proposed the merger of state board exams for Classes 10 and 12.
The proposal, put forth on February 7, suggests the combination of the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), responsible for conducting the High School Leaving Examination (HSLC) for Class 10, and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC), which oversees Class 12 examinations, into a single entity.
The initiative is encapsulated in the Assam State School Education Board Bill, 2024, tabled in the Assembly on February 7, 2024.
The decision to unify these boards under the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) stems from the aim to regulate, supervise, and foster the development of secondary education more efficiently in Assam.
Under the proposed structure, the ASSEB will be led by a chairman appointed by the government, with individual vice-chairmen designated for each division. The board will comprise 21 members serving three-year terms, with the possibility of renewal for an additional period.
This move underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality and administration of secondary education in the state.
