Guwahati, Aug 26: Following the Gauhati High Court acquitting all six convicts in the 2004 bomb blast in Assam’s Dhemaji, the Assam government has asked the DGP to study the judgement.

Speaking to reporters, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “If the government gets legal advice, the government will appeal before the Supreme Court.”

“Dhemaji blast was inquired long back. I have asked the DGP to study the judgement and if we get legal advice we will appeal in the Supreme court. Let us see how the Honourable judges have arrived at this conclusion. The copy of judgement was not available till yesterday (Thursday),” Sarma asserted.

The explosion during the Independence Day celebrations was done by proscribed militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) at Dhemaji, in which 18 people lost their lives, including 13 school children. Six people had been convicted in 2019 in connection with the case.

Earlier, the Dhemaji District and Sessions Court had sentenced Lila Gogoi, Dipanjali Borgohain, Muhi Handique and Jatin Dowari to life imprisonment, and handed a four-year jail term to Prashanta Bhuyan and Hemen Gogoi.

Meanwhile, the families of the victims have expressed their unhappiness with the order. Accused’s counsel Abhijit Khanikar said, “The Gauhati High Court, in its order, said the six people have been acquitted as they have been given the benefit of the doubt. The court didn’t say they were not involved but, in criminal cases, guilt has to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The prosecution could not do that in this case.”
