Guwahati, May 20: Assam government has handed over the accident case of Sub-inspector Junmoni Rabha to CBI on Saturday.
Addressing a press conference here, Assam police DGP GP Singh said, “We have handed over the accident case of Sub-inspector Junmoni Rabha to CBI. As per public sentiment, we have decided to hand over the case to neutral agency CBI. Our own police officer lost her life in the accident, so we have decided that this should be investigated by a neutral agency like CBI.”
“The case was transferred to the CBI on two grounds. Firstly, on the ground of public sentiments and, secondly, also on neutrality.”
“Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his stance on the ongoing investigation into the death of Junmoni Rabha. CM addressed the concerns surrounding the case and assured a thorough investigation,” GP Singh stated.
He further added that the department would be ‘absolutely ruthless’ against any police officials involved in criminal activity. “If anyone is involved, it is their own risk. Police headquarters will take ruthless action against the officer found in criminal activity,” he said.
The DGP further said fake currency racket and fake gold racket will be completely decimated in the State within 30 days. “As of now we have arrested over 70 persons involved in connection with the racket,” he said.
On the other hand, after the CBI took over Junmoni Rabha’s death case from CID, Assam police Superintendents of Nagaon and Lakhimpur police were transferred.
Lakhimpur SP Bedanta Madhab Rajkhowa and Nagaon SP Leena Doley were transferred as there were allegations of them being involved in the case as well as them being connected to a nexus of fake gold smugglers.
It may be mentioned that the office of SP Nagaon had earlier transferred 148 personnel from various police stations, outposts and patrol posts within the district.
Several organisations and Junmoni Rabha’s family had appealed to the government for a CBI investigation
