Guwahati, Aug 18: In a major development, the Assam government has started issuing birth certificates and Aadhaar cards simultaneously to newborns at all its medical colleges.

Taking to X, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said, “In Assam, we have begun a new process of issuing birth certificates and Aadhaar cards to newborns at our medical colleges on the occasion of 78th #IndependenceDay,”.

The birth registration and Aadhar enrollment centres have been established in all the 12 medical colleges in the state and were inaugurated on August 15.

“Since 2021, when people blessed us to serve them, we’ve been consistently working in the direction of reform, perform and transform. We have initiated several first in the state,” Sarma stated.

The project will be gradually extended to district hospitals to ensure children receive both birth certificates and Aadhaar soon after their birth instead of having to queue for these documents later in life.
