Assam govt opens Aadhar centre for those without Aadhar

Must read

Guwahati, July 25: After lakhs of people who are deprived of Aadhaar number for being stuck up in the National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Assam government has announced the opening of an additional centre to address the issue.

Due to biometric discrepancies, many people have not received their Aadhaar cards.

District administration Silchar stated,” Starting from July 25, 2024, a new centre with four receiving counters will be operational at Duck Bungalow, near the DC Office, Silchar. Individuals in the NRC but lacking Aadhaar due to biometric issues are requested to visit this centre to submit their claims”.

The district administration stated that applicants are required to bring relevant documents, including Voter ID, PAN Card, Ration Card, and their NRC ARN number. For additional information, applicants are requested to contact the designated authorities at the centre.

As many as 27 lakh Assamese continue to languish outside formal identification because their biometric details are locked, but they still do not have Aadhaar cards. These are the people who have made claims and objections about the National Register of Citizens. They can’t now apply for new Aadhaar enrolment, either.

Around 3.30 crore people had applied for inclusion in the NRC, but the names of nearly 40 lakhs were excluded in the draft NRC published on July 30, 2018.

Of them, around 36.28 lakh people had claimed for inclusion on the list and about 2 lakhs had registered their objections.
