Boko, June 8: The Water Resources Department of Assam plans to expedite anti-erosion measures and construct new river embankments across worse affected areas under the Boko revenue circle in the Kamrup district of Assam.

Many areas under the Boko revenue circle were affected in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal. The rising water level of the Boko River washed away paddy fields and submerged many villages, including Bakarapara, forcing the villagers to build temporary embankments to protect their paddy fields.

On Friday, Minister Pijush Hazarika made a surprise visit to the village after being informed about the situation on his way to Goalpara district. Taking to X, Minister Pijush Hazarika said, “Took stock of the flood situation at Belpara in Boko. Since there are no embankments in that area, I directed the WRD engineers to repair the breach using tubes. Also to prevent floods, engineers were instructed to carry out the preliminary works for construction of a 3km embankment in the area.”

Hazarika was accompanied by Assam Youth Commission Member Ratul Sharma, BJP Leader Himanshu Shekhar Vaishya, District Administration Officials, Chief Engineer of Water Resources Department and other engineers.

Bhaben Rabha, a Bakarapara villager, said that the department has started working to stop entering the river water in the paddy field from Saturday after the Minister’s visits. He emphasized that river embankment is very crucial for Bakarapara and other nearby villages because the area’s people mainly depend on cultivation. The vegetable gardens and paddy fields are destroyed due to the flooding every year.
