Guwahati, Nov 11: The people of Guwahati are busy buying decorative items and diyas from the market on the occasion of Diwali festival.
Keeping aside the fairy lights and other decorative items, people are seen indulging in celebrating Diwali in the most traditional manner.
However, demand for earthen lamps has skyrocketed and the pottery makers are making good business ahead of the festival.
Guwahati’s Fancy Bazar and other markets were packed with huge crowds on Saturday, a day ahead of Diwali. People are shopping for different types of earthen lamps and electric items.
Diwali is perhaps the most important festival celebrated by Hindus all around the world.
“This time we are not selling loud crackers which cause pollution. We are selling green crackers after the government’s directive against selling loud crackers. People are coming and taking the green crackers. We are selling all kinds of green crackers,” said a shopkeeper at Fancy Bazar, adding that some customers also came asking for loud crackers.
Another shopkeeper at Fancy Bazar said, “This time the rates of the crackers are high compared to previous years. We are selling green crackers which are higher in rates. The green crackers are pollution free but their rates are high. Some customers could not afford the high rates so they are buying less.”
Meanwhile, a customer said, “We are buying decorative items for our home. Diwali is the festival of spreading happiness and being happy. We should think of pollution before burning crackers.”
Diwali has always been synonymous with rangoli colours, joyous celebrations and the cracking sound of firecrackers. But in the last few years, authorities have imposed a ban on firecrackers due to rising air pollution.
