Guwahati, July 11: Hifzur Rahman, a notorious criminal was shot dead in a police encounter near Assam-Meghalaya border on Monday. He had escaped from Silchar Central Jail on May 11.
The encounter took place following intelligence inputs.
When the police team tried to arrest Hifzur, he attacked the officers following which the police were forced to open fire in which Hifzur was seriously injured and was sent for treatment at Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Silchar where he succumbed to his injuries. During the wncounter, two policemen also sustained injuries.
In 2011, Hifjur was arrested for killing a father-son duo in Karimganj.
Meanwhile, in a similar incidence, Shyamal Pal, a convict serving a life sentence for a murder case since 2011, managed to flee from Udalguri Jail on April 16.
On March 19, Abdul Wasid, a criminal accused of multiple crimes also managed to flee from police custody in Karimganj.
He managed to flee, when Wasid was being taken to the chief judicial magistrate court.
However, efforts are underway to recapture him.
