Assam: Himanta blasts opposition’s theatrics in Parliament during PM’s speech on Manipur crisis

Must read

Guwahati, Aug 11: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday slammed the opposition alliance in Parliament on Friday, saying they wanted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak on the Manipur violence but the PM Modi started speaking they staged a walk out, thereby exposing their designs and their objective to disrupt the Parliament.

“They (opposition) demanded that Prime Minister should speak on Manipur. But when Prime Minister started speaking on Manipur, they walked out; so that completely exposed their design that the intention of opposition was not to do anything with Manipur. They just wanted to disrupt the Parliament, they wanted to raise hue and cry inside the Parliament,” he told media persons in Guwahati, stressing “that was not love for Manipur that was for their vested political interest.”

He said Prime Minister spoke from his heart on the Manipur crisis and expressed his affection for the people of the region. “Prime Minister has spoken about Northeastern region; Prime Minister has spoken about Manipur and he also demonstrated how much he has affection for the people of Northeast. So, we are immensely happy, (but) opposition will definitely be unhappy. But I thought or I hoped that as a principal party they should have listened to the Prime Minister’s speech till last,” he said.

Further, he slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for suggesting that Indian Army should solve the Manipur crisis. He recalled the bombing of Aizawl by the Indian Air Force during the Congress regime.

It is to be mentioned here that the Indian Air Force had dropped bombs on Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram, in 1966 during the Indira Gandhi regime, when the secessionists had declared Mizoram independent from Indian Union, calling it ‘Greater Mizoram’.

“Indian Air Force did that in Aizawl, they bombed and violence was coming down. Today Rahul Gandhi is saying that Indian army should stop the violence. That means what? they should open fire on civilians. Is it his prescription? How can he say that,” Sarma questioned.

Expressing that Army will not able to solve anything, he opined, “They will only be able to temporarily quiet or temporarily bring some peace in a given situation. But solution has to be come from heart not from the bullets.”
