Guwahati, July 3: Assam police arrested a man for alleged rape and murder of a 16-year-old minor girl in Kamrup district on Sunday.
The accused has been identified as Bablu Tumung, a autorickshaw driver.
According to reports, the accused allegedly raped and killed a 16-year-old girl and then dumped her body in Digaru river.
The victim was a student of class 8.
According to police, the girl’s body was found on Friday in the Digaru river at Sonapur area.
“On June 26, My younger sister went to market to bring fish. Since then, she didn’t return home. We have filed a missing compliant at Sonapur police station. We don’t know what exactly happened to her. Her body was later found from Digaru river,” said victim’s elder sister.
The incident triggered a protest by locals which turned violent on Sunday at Sonapur police station and demanded capital punishment for the accused.
“We want capital punishment for the accused, who have done a heinous crime,” said a woman protester.
Meanwhile, during the investigation, Tumung confessed to the crime.
