Guwahati, Aug 23: Within a fortnight of the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, another horrific incident of rape of a minor has come to light from Assam’s Nagaon district. Hundreds of residents of Dhing village took to streets on Friday to protest the rape, and demanded for immediate arrest of the culprits.
The civil society groups, student bodies and locals of Dhing area of Nagaon District also observed a 12-hour bandh on Friday and served a 12-hour ultimatum to police to nab the culprits.
The 14-year-old girl was found in a semi-conscious state in Dhing area on Thursday evening, lying near a pond with her cycle besides her. Some local residents spotted the girl and immediately alerted the police.
She was taken by police to the hospital after she lost consciousness during rescue, where she is said to be recovering and in a stable condition.
As per the local reports, the incident took place when the minor was returning home from her tuition in the evening. She was lying on the road without any clothing for around an hour before being rescued.
Shops, markets, and educational institutions in Dhing remained closed on Friday as a mark of protest.
One of protesting youths, who had spotted the girl previous evening and helped with the rescue, said, “The girl was lying by the side of the road and her school bag was also lying. We asked her what happened, she was not able to talk properly and she slowly told us three youth allegedly raped her.
Another youth said they want the police to immediately nab the culprits. “We are protesting the police inaction and we have called for a local bandh and this will continue till the culprits are behind the bar,” he said.
Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the area to enhance security following the incident.
