Guwahati, Nov 11: Rampant cutting of hills under Rani forest in Assam’s East Kamrup Forest Division has been going on unabated.
Sources said sand mafias are operating the nexus by managing the forest officials.
In broad daylight, the sand mafias are razing the hills by using excavators and procuring sand from the hills, destroying the ecology of the entire area.
“Everyday hundreds of dumpers are used to carry illegal sand from the forest. Due to the illegal practice, the entire environment has been affected,” said a source.
Despite public complaints against illegal sand mining, the Forest Department has failed to take action against the sand mafias.
On the other hand, Dhubri police on Friday apprehended a notorious sand mafia Hasanuzzaman Sheikh from Assam’s Dhubri district.
The arrest of Sheikh marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal sand mining operations in the region.
