Assam: IT dept, CBI conduct raids at three coal traders’ residences in Tinsukia

Guwahati, Dec 2: A teams from the IT department and the CBI raided the residences of three prominent coal traders at Margherita in Assam’s Tinsukia on Friday morning.

According to reports, the three traders identified as B Ganesh of Ledo area, Sunil Gurung of Bahbari area and Gobind Chetry of Borgolai area are allegedly running a coal syndicate and involved in illegal coal mining in various coalfields under Margherita Coal India Limited.

Interestingly, local police personnel from the Assam police department were not present during the raids. The raids were backed by a large team of CRPF personnel, and conducted simultaneously at the residence of the three traders in Bahbari and Ledo.

According to sources, the raids were conducted to check tax evasion and combat the flow of unaccounted wealth ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

Sources said they are one of the most powerful coal traders of the region who, with the help of politicians, are running the coal syndicate.

Mentionably, illegal coal mining has been going unabated in Margherita-Ledo area for a long time, but now the central agencies have begun monitoring the coal traders of the region.
