Assam: Jailed MLA Akhil Gogoi acquitted in one NIA case

Guwahati, June 22: Assam’s jailed legislator Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday got a partial relief after a National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Guwahati acquitted him off one of the two pending cases against him in connection to his involvement in the violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.

Gogoi, an activist who won from Sibasagar constituency last Assam Assembly elections the results of which was declared on May 2 this year, has been in jail since December 2019 in connection with various cases.

On Tuesday, the NIA court discharged him of sedition charges as per the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) filed at Chabua police station.

In April this year, he was acquitted of this case but the central agency had appealed again, of which he was finally acquitted on Tuesday.

For the Chandmari case that is pending against him, Gogoi has been charged under various charges including Sections 120B, 124A, 153B IPC and Sections 18 and 39 of the UAPA.
