Guwahati, Dec 30: In a major breakthrough under “Operation Praghat,” the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police apprehended Gazi Rahman, a 35-year-old jihadi operative from Bhidevaguri, Kokrajhar, on charges of masterminding a terror plot against leaders of the RSS and other Hindu organizations.
The fugitive Rahman, arrested in Kokrajhar district, had been on the run for weeks. He is the primary suspect in an alleged conspiracy tied to radical networks and has been booked under STF Police Station Case No. 21/2024. The arrest was the culmination of meticulous coordination between the STF and local police units.
With Rahman’s capture, the STF has now arrested 12 operatives linked to terror outfits like Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) from Kokrajhar, Dhubri, and Barpeta districts in just two weeks. These arrests are part of a sustained crackdown targeting sleeper cells, radicalization efforts, and cross-border extremism.
The ongoing anti-terror operation seeks to dismantle networks propagating radical ideologies. The STF is focused on neutralizing threats in Assam’s vulnerable regions, particularly along its borders.
A senior police official commended the effectiveness of enhanced intelligence-sharing protocols with central agencies. “Our actions are part of a larger strategy to counter radical ideologies and prevent unlawful activities. Close coordination with central agencies and robust intelligence gathering have been pivotal in our success,” the official remarked.
