Guwahati, Nov 28: In a tragic incident, an adult elephant was killed by a speeding train in Assam’s Biswanath district on Monday night.

Sources said a herd of elephant had strayed out of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in search of food.

According to forest officials, the herd wandered onto the railway track, resulting in a tragic collision with the Naharlagun-Guwahati Donyi Polo Express.

A local resident said a heard of wild elephants was crossing the railway tracks when the train came. “The other elephants managed to cross but one of them fell in front of the train,” locals said.

A team of doctors from the forest department rushed the spot but the elephant had died by the time they reached.

In another incident, a one-and-a-half month old elephant calf separated from its mother died after falling into a mud pit in Titabar district on Monday night.

The incident occurred near the Rangajan locality of Titabar under the Jorhat district.

The calf, possibly separated from its herd while foraging for food, wandered out of the Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary near Mariani.
