Assam: Kaziranga submerged, movement of commercial vehicles restricted

Guwahati, July 1: Amid the worsening flood situation in many districts of Assam, the flood waters of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries have engulfed world-renowned Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve.

As per official data, the flood waters submerged 22 forest camps in the Agoratoli range, 10 in the Kaziranga range, 8 in the Bagori range, 5 in the Burapahar range, 6 in Bokakhat range, 10 in Biswanath Wildlife Division.

In view of the present situation, Golaghat police have restricted the movement of commercial vehicles through National Highway 37 (now 715), which passes through the KNP, urging citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to the traffic regulations to ensure the safety of both humans and wildlife during this critical period.

Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police, Golaghat, has issued a traffic advisory for vehicles crossing the national highway that passes through the national park.

The official notification states, “In view of the Flood in Kaziranga National Park, to ensure the safety and security of Wildlife, the following Traffic arrangements have been made w.e.f. July 1, 2024.
1. No Commercial Vehicle shall be allowed to move through Kaziranga National Park.
2. Only Private Vehicles shall be allowed to move at the regulated speed during the daytime.
3. Only local private vehicles will be allowed to cross Kaziranga National Park during night hours.
4. Commercial Vehicles shall be diverted at (a) Numaligarh Tiniali, (b) Bagori border, and (c) Bokakhat Town.
5. OC of Numaligarh Rural PS and Kamargaon PS shall be in charge of Numaligarh Tiniali. They will divert all Commercial Vehicles towards Karbi Anglong.
6. Commercial Trucks going only till Bokakhat Town shall be allowed to move from Numaligarh Tiniali.
7. OC, Bokakhat PS shall stop all Commercial Vehicles at Bokakhat, going towards Kohora.
8. IC, Kohora OP shall stop all Commercial vehicles from Bagori side.
9. OC, Golaghat PS and OC, Bogijan PS shall regulate Traffic from Rangajan to Garampani.
10. SDPO, Bokakhat shall ensure the Traffic arrangements.
11. Addl. SP (HQ), Golaghat shall supervise and depute additional Traffic personnel at Panbari and Haldhibari to regulate traffic.

Notably, the flood situation in Assam has worsened, affecting over 2.62 lakh people across 12 districts. The latest bulletin of ASDMA states that the flood affected 2.62 lakh people in 12 districts of the State.

The latest bulletin of the Central Water Commission (CWC) marked the Brahmaputra river and Dhansiri rivers above danger levels.
