GUWAHATI, Jan 31: In a landmark move, the Assam Legislative Assembly will convene its first-ever outstation session in Kokrajhar on February 17, marking a historic shift in the state’s parliamentary tradition. This unprecedented decision will see the opening day of the 2025 Budget Session held outside the Assembly’s permanent premises for the first time.
Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary described the event as a defining moment. “This will be a historic day for Assam. Never before has the Legislative Assembly met outside its designated session hall,” Daimary told reporters on Thursday.
The Speaker highlighted that the outstation session aims to foster greater public engagement with parliamentary proceedings. “People should understand the debates, the bills passed, and the decisions made by their representatives. Awareness is essential for citizens to express their views and hold the government accountable,” he emphasized.
Daimary further stressed the importance of transparency in strengthening democracy. “When citizens participate actively in governance, policies better reflect their needs. This session in Kokrajhar will enhance the connection between the government and the people of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).”
The session’s agenda will include the Governor’s address, followed by discussions on the socio-economic development of Sixth Schedule areas. Lawmakers must deliberate on current challenges and explore strategies to accelerate growth in these autonomous regions.
To facilitate a deeper understanding of regional issues, a special interactive session is scheduled for February 11 with stakeholders from the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), and Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC). This engagement aims to equip legislators with firsthand insights into the concerns affecting these Sixth Schedule regions.
Daimary expressed optimism about the historic session’s potential impact. “Kokrajhar’s session will empower local communities and reaffirm the government’s commitment to inclusive development,” he said, underscoring its significance as a bridge between governance and grassroots representation.
