Jorhat, May 28: It was a narrow escape for Rupjyoti Kurmi, Congress lawmaker from Assam’s Mariani, after miscreants fired at him along the Assam- Nagaland border on Thursday.
Miscreants from the Nagaland side opened fire targeting the Congress legislature and PSOs at the Disai valley Reserve Forest area along the Assam-Nagaland border in the upper Assam Jorhat district.
“Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi along with his personal security officers or PSOs and other security personnel had gone to check encroachment from the other side at the Dessoi valley reserve forest, suddenly miscreants from other side started firing at them.
Somehow, they managed to flee from the area,” a senior police official informed.
Rupjyoti Kurmi said, “Today, I went to Dessoi valley reserve forest after getting reports of encroachment from another side. Suddenly, the miscreants opened fire at us and we luckily escaped from that place. I have already raised the question at the Assam Assembly but the government is nothing talking to Nagaland counterpart to solve the vexed issue.”
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed concern at the grave incident and directed Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) GP Singh to rush to the spot to take stock of the situation.
Jorhat Superintendent of Police, Ankur Jain said, “The area is a disputed area and few days ago forest department have cleared the encroachment. The villagers at the other side of the border were panicked and started firing. Our security forces also blanked fire in retaliation.”
