Guwahati, April 1: A leopard was brutally killed by a mob in Assam’s Golaghat district on Friday.
According to reports, the incident took place in Tengani of Barpathar near a tea garden.
Sources said that a woman was grazing her cattle when the leopard suddenly appeared and attacked her. Two others people were also injured while trying to save the woman.
According to sources, furious about the incident, the mob then killed the leopard and chopped it into pieces before burying it.
Following the incident, the three injured persons were admitted to the Golaghat Civil Hospital.
Meanwhile, the forest department and the police arrived at the spot and exhumed the leopard’s carcass for a post-mortem.
“After getting information, we arrived at the spot and recovered the carcass of the leopard. The leopard was beaten to death and body parts were cut into pieces. We have started an investigation into the matter,” said a forest official.
Man-animal conflict has been rising due to shrinking of forest covers. Leopards have been known to attack livestock and people, often resulting in loss of life to human as well the big cats.
