Dibrugarh, May 6: A viral phone conversation has ignited tensions in Assam’s Tinsukia district, leading to the public humiliation of a BJP worker by agitated members of the Moran community in Digboi.
The individual targeted has been identified as Kalpajyoti Phukan, a BJP worker and aide to local MLA Suren Phukan. The incident unfolded in Bogapani, where locals dragged Phukan from his residence to the Tingrai market, forcing him to kneel before publicly shaving his head in protest.
The unrest follows the circulation of a video showing a confrontation between BJP MLA Suren Phukan and Junmoni Moran, an independent candidate contesting from Ward No. 7 of the Borhapjan Panchayat. In the video, Junmoni is seen accusing the MLA of violating the model code of conduct during a panchayat poll campaign. The footage quickly went viral across social media and regional news channels.

Subsequently, supporters of MLA Phukan lodged an FIR against Junmoni Moran at Doomdooma Police Station, leading to her arrest and judicial custody.
While she was in custody, another controversy erupted after a phone call recording surfaced online. The audio allegedly captured a heated exchange between Congress leader Lachit Moran (alias Rajiv) and Nani Gopal Dutta, a close associate of MLA Phukan. During the call, BJP worker Kalpajyoti Phukan was reportedly heard questioning Lachit Moran’s presence in Tingrai and implying a veiled threat.
This sparked widespread anger among the Moran community, culminating in the public protest against Phukan.
Police later reached the spot and rescued Kalpajyoti Phukan from the scene. One individual, identified as Akash Moran, was detained for questioning in connection with the incident.
Investigations are ongoing.
