Guwahati, April 23: A heart-wrenching road accident on NH37 in Dibrugarh district of Assam claimed the lives of a mother and her three-year-old daughter. The victims were returning to Khumtai from Guwahati when their rented WagonR vehicle collided with a stationary truck just 5km from their home on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred in the Jhalam area under Moran PS.
The deceased woman has been identified as 43-year-old Boby Akhter, a resident of Seujpur under Khumtai Police OP in Dibrugarh. She died on the spot while her daughter succumbed to her injuries en route to the local hospital. The driver of the WagonR sustained minor injuries.
The registration number of the WagonR is AS 01 QC 3813, and the truck’s registration number is HR 58 D 6757. The driver informed the media that Akhter had brought four pet dogs with her, one of which also died from injuries sustained in the accident. He stated, “I tried to avoid the accident, but the left side of my vehicle hit the truck.”
Moran police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
The presence of stationary trucks on highways has been a recurring factor in many unfortunate incidents in Assam. These trucks often halt due to technical glitches, creating a potential hazard for other vehicles. Authorities must address the issue of stationary trucks on highways promptly, ensuring that necessary repairs and maintenance are carried out or some warning sign boards are placed near such vehicles to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
