Guwahati, Feb 23: Assam cabinet minister Jayanta Mallabaruah on Friday said that the cabinet has decided to scrap the Assam Moslem Marriage and Divorce Registration Act 1935.
Talking to reporters, Jayanta Mallabaruah said, “We are going to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and during a cabinet meeting the Assam Moslem Marriage and Divorce Act 1935 was scrapped”.
Mallabaruah said that this is the first step towards implementation of UCC.
“We have special marriage act and every marriages will come under the purview of this act. The District Commissioner or the District Register will take over the custody from the 94 Muslim registrar and the Assam Government will give them a one-time compensation of Rs 2 lakh,” Baruah said.

He said, ” The Assam Moslem Marriage and Divorce Act 1935 was a very old act, going on from the British days. In today’s society the act has no meaning. It’s our first step towards implementing the UCC,”.
“We have seen that through this act many under age marriages were taken place who were below 18 years. So, this will be a significant step to stop the child marriage,” he added.
