Guwahati, May 1: In a major business development, Assam based Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) plans to enter Myanmar to set up retail outlets once the situation is conducive.
Speaking to media persons, Chairman and Managing Director of NRL, Bhaskar Jyoti Phuka said, “We are present in Bangladesh. Myanmar has been on radar for quite some time. In the past, we have exported through roads directly from Numaligarh to Moreh travelling roughly 421km.”
“Unfortunately, what has happened is that there is regime change in Myanmar. The area close to Moreh on the Indian side is Sagaing Region and contiguous to Moreh. This is an area of high potential, totally un-serviced area. There are around 40 lakh people living in the area. We have worked out a detailed plan for the area,” Phukan added.
In September 2017, NRL had supplied High Speed Diesel to Myanmar by land route. Numaligarh Refinery Ltd. (NRL) despatched the first diesel consignment of 30 MT of High Speed Diesel on September 4, 2017, through NH 37 across the Moreh Custom Check Point on the Indian side and Tamu Custom Check Point on the Myanmar side.
NRL is increasing its capacity from 3 to 9 MMTPA (million metric tonnes per annum) with an investment of Rs 28,000 Crore.
Myanmar’s Tatmadaw (military) have often engaged in armed clashes with the civilian forces since February 2021 after the military junta seized power in the neighbouring country.
