Guwahati, Feb 28: Leader of Opposition (LO) Debabrata Saikia on Wednesday said that they have objected the decision of the Assam government to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act.

Speaking to media persons, Saikia said, “On February 23, 2024, the Assam cabinet has decided that the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act is no more required citing several examples. According to them(BJP), it was an absolute act enacted during the British period, their is no mandatory provision of registration in marriages and divorces and their is no accountability no records wheather some persons who are below 18 years of age in case of girls and below 21 years of age in case of male are being married. This three are the major reasons but it is not true because it was only way to make for UCC, they are trying it,”.

“The cabinet decision to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act was done in a hasty manner without consulting and going through with the act. It is very unfortunate while the Assembly is in session and the leader of the house suddenly decided to go out and make statement in the public without taking any confidence, the house whome he is the leader,” Saikia stated.

The Assam Cabinet gave approval to the Assam Repealing Ordinance, 2024 for repealing the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act on Friday.

It is believed that by repealing the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, the Assam government paved the way for the Uniform Civil Code in the state.
