Guwahati, Aug 29: Assam’s United Opposition Forum (UOF) on Thursday submitted a memorandum to President of India Draupadi Murmu through Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya seeking action against chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for targeting minority community.
The opposition parties asked Governor to removed chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for alleged violation of Constitution.
Talking to reporters, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, general secretary of United Opposition Forum, Assam, said, “We 18 political parties under United Opposition Forum, Assam submitted memorandum to Indian president through Governor regarding the communal environment created by the chief minister of Assam. Chief minister is the main motivator and initiator to create the communal environment in Assam.”
“He is the main accused person to create a riot like situation in the state. So, it is very dangerous to the constitution of India and very dangerous to the rule of law. In Assam today, there is no rule of law and it is totally a ‘Jungle Raj’. So, we have seen the initiatives and statement of the chief minister of Assam in the assembly also. He trying to divide the house in the name of upper Assam and lower Assam. His main intention is to polarize the Assam in the name of community,” Gogoi added.
He further said, “We demand the President of India to disqualify him from the post or sack him from the post of chief minister.”
Senior Congress leader and Nagaon MP, Pradyut Bordoloi, said the chief minister has become a communal person and defied all norms of the constitution. “He is holding a constitutional post as the chief minister of Assam but he has taken such a partisan approach and started dividing the people of Assam on the basis of religion. Everywhere, inside assembly, outside assembly, he is spitting communal venom. This kind of person is very dangerous to hold the post of chief ministership, which is a constitutional post,” he said.
He opined that CM Himanta Sarma has become very dangerous for politics and the common people. “He is the prime instigator for creating communal configuration among the communities,” he alleged.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday invited the opposition for a debate on the demographic changes concerning Hindus and Muslims in the state. While speaking at the ongoing state assembly session, Sarma stated that demographic changes are occurring in parts of lower Assam and could lead to an unprecedented human disaster.
“The Hindu-Muslim issue is the most burning issue in the state today; we need to debate and resolve it,” Sarma said in the assembly, responding to a resolution on demographic change in particular districts.
