Guwahati, Oct 3: In a major crackdown, Assam police on Tuesday arrested 1039 people in connection with child marriage cases.
According to reports, Assam Police carried out raids at multiple locations of Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Gossaigaon, Serfanguri, Kachugaon, Bogoribari in Kokrajhar.
Assam chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on X, “Assam Police has arrested over 800 accused persons in a special operation which began in the early hours of dawn. The number of arrests is likely to rise.”
Later, he again stated on X, “The number now stands at 1,039.”

In September, Assam police had detained 17 fake “qazis” in different operations in Hailakandi district of Assam.
In February this year, Assam Police arrested at least 2,666 people in connection with cases related to child marriages in the State.
