Guwahati, April 18: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday strongly criticized the Congress party, accusing it of spreading misinformation and attempting to tarnish the state’s image ahead of the panchayat polls.
His remarks came after Congress leaders in Assam alleged that their panchayat poll candidates were being intimidated into withdrawing their nominations. Responding to the accusations, Sarma dismissed them as baseless and claimed the Congress was “constantly trying to defame Assam.”

Addressing the media, the Chief Minister challenged the opposition’s claims that the police were being used to threaten candidates, saying if such incidents had actually occurred, they would have been widely reported in local newspapers or on TV channels. “Congress is saying this, but I have not seen the news in local newspapers or on TV channels,” he said.
He cited the recently held Rabha Hasong election as an example, stating that the process was peaceful and without incident. “There are 22,000 villages in Assam. They’ve only pointed to one or two isolated cases. If they inform the administration, then the administration will take action on it immediately,” he said emphasizing that the district administration and police are maintaining neutrality to ensure peaceful elections.

Maintaining that “Congress always tries to defame Assam,” he called for reporting of specific allegations or instances of harassment. “We are ready to act, but so far, no candidate has lodged an official complaint,” he said.
He also mentioned that Congress leaders Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Borah may have spoken to the DGP, but no formal grievances have been registered.
