Guwahati, June 26: A large number of pilgrims thronged the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati on Monday to offer prayers to Goddess Kamakhya on the occassion of the annual Ambubachi Mela. The famous Ambubachi mela started at the historic temple.
The doors of the famous Kamakhaya temple reopened on Monday after being closed for three days.
At the Kamakhaya temple, the Ambubachi Mela’s Nivritti is being performed on Monday.

The Ambubachi Mela is one of the biggest Hindu religious event held at Kamakhya temple situated atop the Nilachal hill.
It is also one of the biggest festival of the Kamakhya temple and is celebrated every year in the month of June.
The grand mela is a celebration of the yearly menstruation course of goddess Maa Kamakhya.
Kamakhya Temple is one of 51 Shaktipeeths in the country.
There is a believe that Mother Earth becomes un-pure for three days during the Goddess’ menstrual cycle. This is one of the main reason on why any farming work is not taken on during this period.
Ahead of the Ambubachi Mela, the Assam government and the Kamakhya Temple management committee had made all the arrangements including security arrangements for this year’s Ambubachi Mela.
