Guwahati, March 27: Assam police arrested the mastermind behind an online trading scam from Kolkata and brought him back to the Sribhumi district in Assam.
The mastermind of the online trading scam has been identified as Mohammad Shakir.
According to reports, Shakir was the key accused in a fraudulent scheme that targeted investors in Barak Valley and Sribhumi.
Shakir had been absconding for many months.
After receiving intelligence inputs, a special task force of the Badarpur police successfully nabbed Shakir and his brother, Mohammad Jabir, from Mukundapur under the Jadavpur police station in Kolkata.
Both were taken into custody and transported to Sribhumi, where the police are currently interrogating them.
According to the police, Shakir orchestrated an elaborate scam by enticing investors with promises of exorbitant returns.
“Through such deceptive tactics, he managed to siphon off approximately Rs 150 crore before fleeing to Kolkata. Shakir was the main mastermind behind the online scam. He targeted the poor citizens of Sribhumi,” said a police official.
The case took a significant turn after one Tahir Ahmed, a victim from Badarpur, lodged a formal complaint implicating 13 individuals in the scam.
Shakir, a resident of the Bakarsal area near Sribhumi, is now in police custody.
