Guwahati, Sept 15: Assam Police’s crime branch and Guwahati city Police have busted an international fake call centre racket operating from Guwahati. The raids were carried across two-days in which 8 illegal call centres were busted.

These call centres were running an illegal internet-based telephone exchange to scam people within and outside the country. The scamming racket was operating for the past two years.

191 persons have been detained including arrest of 3 masterminds for running the international racket.

Police officials said the scammers had taken lease line connections with fake documents from different internet service providers to create fake toll exchange, and internet-based calls were used to scam people.

Guwahati Police Commissioner, Diganta Borah, said police had received reliable intelligence input that some scammer gangs were operational in Guwahati who were involved in operating illegal Call Centres across India. “(The scammers) were scamming and cheating gullible Indians and foreign nationals by impersonating as Tech Support Staff… Pop-Ups in personal computers and by impersonating as legitimate Customer Service Representatives to deceive individuals and cheat them of their money or personal information making various false claims to create a sense of urgency or fear that the Bank Account has been compromised, computer has a virus, Personal identifiable information are at risk, computer or social media account has been hacked,” he said.

He further said the gang of scammers initiated contact through unsolicited phone calls, claiming to be from a well-known company or organization, such as a bank, Tech Support, Government Agency or even a popular Online service provider.

They would ask the victims to install remote Desktop Software and thereby get access to the victim’s personal computers and thereafter steal personal information by planting malwares on the targeted victim’s devices, he said.
