Tinsukia, January 7: In a major operation against human trafficking, Assam Police rescued two abducted minor girls and arrested nine individuals involved in an inter-state trafficking network. The crackdown uncovered a well-organized racket operating between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Suraj Bhumij, Vishal Barman, Cheetah Barman, Nishita Bhumij, Phulumani Goyala, Biren Taid, Pankaj Doley, Raju Tide, and Udip Sharma. According to police, arrests were made in both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Speaking to the media, Tinsukia Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Nitisha Jagtap, explained that the operation began on December 29, following the filing of an FIR at the Tinsukia Police Station regarding the abduction of two minor girls.
“Two suspects were immediately arrested, but the girls remained missing. Investigations revealed they were taken to Arunachal Pradesh,” Jagtap said.
On January 2, police rescued one of the girls from Itanagar and the other from Naharlagun, both in Arunachal Pradesh. “The rescued girls provided critical information about their ordeal. Based on their statements and further interrogations, we uncovered a larger human trafficking racket and made additional arrests,” Jagtap added.
Sources indicate that human trafficking has become a lucrative illegal business in the Northeast, with traffickers luring or abducting girls and selling them to other states for significant sums.
“The operation revealed a deeply rooted network involved in exploiting vulnerable individuals,” the DSP said.
