Guwahati, March 18: In a major crackdown on vehicle theft, Assam Police on Monday recovered 13 stolen bikes and arrested 11 thieves, including several from Manipur.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Gaingamlung Golmei and Heibokmayum Monouwar from Manipur’s Thoubal; Inamul Ali from Rangia; Nk Naga Naomi; Raju Sankhare; Leivon Sangte Kom; Muhammad Akbar; M. Nemneithem Haokip from Manipur’s Tengnoupal; Lunjapao Doungel from Manipur’s Churachandpur; Jangminthang Haokip from Manipur’s Kangpokpi; and Paomoija Haokip from Manipur’s Senapati.
A key linkman involved in the racket was also arrested in Goalpara.
“During the investigation, they revealed that the linkman in Assam handed over the stolen bikes to a Manipur-based theft network through a local intermediary,” an official said.
He added, “We have recovered 13 stolen bikes along with a Scorpio SUV and two Thar SUVs.”
The investigation further revealed that the gang operated with high efficiency, specifically targeting Royal Enfield bikes, which they managed to steal in just 45 seconds. The thieves flew into Guwahati, set up temporary bases for four to five days, and then executed the thefts.
Sources said that after the thefts, the linkman sold the stolen vehicles to Myanmar for resale.
Recently, police have arrested several bike lifters from different parts of Assam, leading to the recovery of many stolen bikes.
“The gangs operated in a well-coordinated manner, swiftly lifting vehicles and selling them. This was a large-scale racket operating in the city,” a police source said.
