Guwahati, Mar 15: Assam Police is now equipped with cutting-edge warfare training, enhancing its preparedness for modern security challenges.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the newly refurbished premises of the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam, on Saturday.
Spread over 340 acres, the academy is being upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs 1,024 crore in two phases, officials said. The first phase, completed for Rs 167.4 crore, includes a five-story building equipped with smart classrooms, a state-of-the-art weapon training simulator, research labs, administrative offices, a museum, and a modern parade ground.
The modern infrastructure is designed to provide trainees with both theoretical and practical aspects of police training seamlessly. The academy features real-world combat scenario training facilities and a high-tech weapon simulator that can be adapted to multiple firearms, helping trainees develop and hone their firing skills. The facility also includes special modules for commando training, aligned with military training standards.
The smart classrooms are equipped with interactive digital boards and personal computers, enhancing the learning experience. Additionally, the building houses a well-stocked library, computer labs, and seminar rooms to support comprehensive training and research initiatives.
Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah emphasized Assam’s transformation, stating, “Assam, once known for insurgency, is now emerging as the country’s semiconductor hub. Under the Modi government, Assam has left behind its past of unrest and insurgency to become a center of technological and industrial growth. With the establishment of India’s first semiconductor unit here, the state is witnessing unprecedented development.”
He further highlighted the legacy of the legendary Ahom general, saying, “Lachit Borphukan was a great warrior who defeated the Mughals and drove them back to Delhi. Today, in his name, the Assam Police Academy has been inaugurated with state-of-the-art technology.”
Recalling his personal experience, Shah said, “I was seven years old when I first learned about Lachit Borphukan in school. However, until my graduation, there was no mention of him in our textbooks. His legacy was confined to Assam. But now, his life story has been translated into 23 languages and is being taught across the country, allowing more people to recognize his greatness.”
Discussing Assam’s progress, he stated, “Several peace accords have been signed, and over 10,000 youths have left insurgency to join the mainstream. With massive investments in infrastructure, Assam is not just a symbol of peace but a growing economic powerhouse.”
He further announced, “The Modi government will invest Rs 3 lakh crore in infrastructure development in Assam. Now, not just Assamese youths, but people from other parts of India will come here for jobs.”
Taking a dig at the Congress, Shah remarked, “I want to ask the Congress party—why did you let Assam burn in the fire of unrest and insurgency? Why was there no peace and development during your rule? In contrast, in the last ten years, the Modi government has brought peace, infrastructure growth, and development to Assam.”
He said 10,000 youths have now returned to the mainstream, leaving behind insurgency and violence. Earlier, the Assam Police was engaged in combating insurgency; now, they are focused on public service. The overwhelming support for the BJP in every election has been crucial. Under Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, Assam is attracting investments worth Rs 5,000 lakh crore.”
