Assam Police took proactive measures to avert violence during Waqf Act protests

Must read

Guwahati, April 13: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the state police had “strong intelligence inputs” warning of potential unrest during Friday’s protests against the Waqf Act. However, he credited law enforcement for working “extensively” to ensure that the demonstrations remained peaceful.

“We had strong intelligence inputs that Assam could witness some disturbances due to protests by the minority community yesterday,” Sarma said at a press conference in Guwahati. He added that the alerts were received five days in advance.

“In response, Assam Police reached out to minority community leaders and masjid committees. They worked tirelessly for five days. Yesterday was a day of immense satisfaction,” the Chief Minister said.

According to Sarma, protests were reported from three locations, each involving about 150 participants. He expressed gratitude to the minority community and its leaders for ensuring a peaceful demonstration.

“Maintaining law and order is the police’s foremost responsibility, and they will continue to uphold it,” he said.

Referring to the legal challenges around the Waqf Act, Sarma urged those concerned to engage through the judicial system. “If there is anything to say, there are proper platforms. The matter is already before the Supreme Court. They can argue for or against it there,” he added.
