Addressing a press conference Bhupen Borah said, “I am very much disheartened after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attacked Gaurav Gogoi’s wife and raised question about her citizenship. Assembly is the sacred place for us the speaker is the custodian of the assembly and Chief Minister is leader of the assembly but then how can Sarma and his party leaders target to opposition leader’s wife.”

A section of BJP workers and leaders, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has launched an offensive against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, raising questions about his wife’s foreign citizenship and her having worked in Pakistan in the past.

Gogoi Wednesday rubbished this as politicking ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly election.

In reference to Gaurav’s wife Elizabeth Gogoi — who is originally from the UK and works in climate policy — Sarma posted on X on Wednesday morning that Indian Foreign Services officers require permission from the Union government to marry foreigners and commit to their spouses acquiring Indian citizenship.

“However, allowing a foreign spouse of a lawmaker to retain foreign citizenship for 12 years is far too long. Loyalty to the nation must always take precedence over all considerations,” he wrote.

Borah criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and said he should focuss on how to develop Assam not by involving in cheap criticism.

“It is not the duty of Himanta Biswa Sarma. Their are many agencies in India they will find out how is a citizen or not. It is not the work of chief minister, he should think about development but he is involved in cheap things,” he said.

Borah further added, “Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma failed in every sphere and to divert the issue he is doing such controversy.”
