Guwahati, Sept 25: Over a hundred parents staged protest at Carmel School in Rani near Guwahati in Kamrup district on Tuesday after Hindu students were allegedly served beef at the school hostel. The parents demanded accountability from the school authorities, particularly the principal.

The incident comes at a time when Hindu groups are trying to enforce ban on cow slaughter across the nation. Jagatguru Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati has proposed to hold a ‘cow protection march’ and declaring the animal as ‘mother of the nation’ in Shillong on October 2. next. The proposed rally is being vehemently opposed by several groups in Meghalaya.

According to reports, on September 19, the Hindu students of Class 7 were allegedly forced to eat beef by some students from Manipur during tiffin time. The incident came to light when the parents were informed about it, leading to a backlash against the school management, who reportedly tried to cover up the incident.

Reportedly, a Hindu teacher had taken the issue to the principal, but the concerned teacher was suspended. On Monday, some of the guardians had formally approached the principal to take action on the matter but the principal instead tried to cover-up the incident.

Following the protest after lack of action from school administration, CRPF personnel have been deployed at the school premises to maintain order. Officials from Palashbari Circle and the local police are also present.

The protesters gathered outside the school accused the principal of attempting to suppress the incident and intimidate the affected Hindu students. A formal complaint was also lodged by the parents at the Rani police station.

Parents have also raised concerns about the school’s lax regulations and alleged that incidents of mistreatment, including physical abuse of students, are frequent.

They criticized the school for neglecting government guidelines and running what they described as an unchecked business that jeopardizes the educational and emotional well-being of students from rural backgrounds.

“They have served beef meat to our children. We would not tolerate such thing. The principal of the school is responsible for the incident,” a guardian alleged.

He further said, “The incident happened on September 19, when my son came home from school, he told us that he along with other students have consumed meat. After consuming the meat, he came to know that it was a beef meat. Most of the Hindu students were served beef meat.”

During the protest, the angry parents and guardian shouted slogans of “Manipuri go back”.

Notably, this is not the first time that serious allegations have been made against Carmel School, which has been under scrutiny for various issues in the past.

The Christian Missionary School in Kamrup district is run by the Sisters of the Apostolic Carmel and administered by the Carmel Nilaya Society.
