Guwahati, Jan 8: In a remarkable acknowledgment of its cultural and natural splendor, Assam has secured the fourth spot in The New York Times’ coveted list of “52 Places to Go in 2025.” The northeastern state, tucked between the borders of Myanmar and Bangladesh, has long been a well-kept secret for travelers seeking pristine landscapes, rich heritage, and authentic experiences. Now, with growing global recognition and infrastructure improvements, Assam is poised to welcome the world.
“Assam, a hilly state near the borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, has long been a gateway to Northeast India, a remote, culturally distinct and comparatively crowd-free region that hangs as if by a thread from the country’s mainland. Now, the area is seeing both more international recognition and increased accessibility” the New York Times says.
“In 2024, the Charaideo Moidams, or Pyramids of Assam, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. These ancient burial mounds, constructed during the Ahom dynasty between the 13th and 19th centuries, offer a unique glimpse into the region’s royal legacy and spiritual essence” the newspaper says.
In 2023-24, 70,41,206 domestic and 26,129 international tourists visited Assam.
Their inclusion in the World Heritage list not only shines a spotlight on Assam’s unique legacy but also underscores its potential as a hub of cultural tourism.
Beyond its historical treasures, Assam offers visitors the chance to explore its world-renowned tea gardens, where some of the finest tea in the world is cultivated. The lush estates provide a serene escape, blending natural beauty with the art of tea-making. Meanwhile, nature enthusiasts can head to Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in its own right, to marvel at the endangered one-horned rhinoceros and other wildlife.
Accessibility has been a crucial factor in Assam’s rise as a travel destination. Recent road improvements have significantly enhanced connectivity within the state, making even remote attractions easier to reach. Guwahati, Assam’s largest city and gateway, is undergoing a major airport expansion in 2025, which will quadruple its capacity and establish stronger regional and international links.
