Guwahati, Dec 11: The Sadou Asom Goria Jatiya Parishad (SAGJP) welcomes the decision of the Assam government to implement the socioeconomic census of Goria and other indigenous communities as per its cabinet decision.
“We, the Sadou Asom Goria Jatiya Parishad, appreciate the said decision, but we have apprehensions about the establishment selected by the government for implementing the census. The Directorate of Minority Affairs and Char Development Department, which is selected for implementing the census, may not do a proper census because most of the officials in the said department belong to Muslim communities other than the gorias, even though they don’t know about the features of the goria community,” said Mir Arif Ikbal Hussain, general secretary of SAGJP.
He said, “Even they are not faithful to the cause of the Goria people. In such circumstances, if the census is implemented by the said establishment, we have apprehension that a proper census may not be the outcome of the process, and people who are not Goria and other notified communities will be included.”
“We make a demand to the government to think about the matter again and implement the census by a body other than the Directorate of Minority and Char Development, and we suggest the government initiate the process through the Directorate of Tribal Affairs Department,” Islam said.
