Guwahati, June 18: In a tragic turn of events that has sent shockwaves across the region, a senior officer of Assam Police shot himself dead after his wife passed away in Assam’s Guwahati. IPS officer Shiladitya Chetia allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday.
Chetia was currently serving as the Secretary of Home & Political, Government of Assam.
Reportedly, Chetia committed suicide in Guwahati’s Nemcare Hospital, after his wife passed away earlier in the day following prolonged battle with cancer. The circumstances leading to his death are still being investigated but Chetia reportedly used his service pistol to end his life. Sources said he was deeply affected by his wife’s long battle with cancer and her subsequent death, leading him to take this tragic step.
Assam Director General of Police, Gyanendra Pratap Singh, expressed grief on behalf of the entire Assam Police force on Chetia’s demise. Taking to his official ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) handle, DGP GP Singh said, “In an unfortunate turn of events, Sri Shiladitya Chetia IPS 2009 RR, Secretary Home & Political Government of Assam, took his own life this evening, a few minutes after the attending physician declared the death of his wife who was battling cancer for a long time. The entire Assam Police family is in deep grief.”

Chetia had previously served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Tinsukia and Sonitpur districts in Assam, earning respect and recognition for his service.
