Guwahati, Nov 9: The special children of Shishu Sarothi School in Guwahati gears up to celebrate the festival of light and this year they made around 5000 earthen lamp.
Despite suffering from different disabilities, the Students make earthen lamps, colouring, painting with full zeal and enthusiasm.
Rajasshree Das, Communication person, Shishu Sarothi said, “The students in school are taught the skills to become self reliant so that they can stand shoulder to shoulder with other children. The earthen lamps made by these children are sold in the market. This is to empower children with disabilities so that they can be financially independent in future and at least earn a living. This year Shishu Sarothi has made five thousand diyas. Every year we made diyas before Diwali,”.
“The students enjoyed a lot during diya making. Every year they made diyas during Diwali. We urged everyone to buy our diyas and enjoy the Diwali festival with diyas not with crackers. The crackers caused sound pollution and air pollution,” said Gayatri Devi Adhikari, vocational teacher, Shishu Sarothi.
Aditiya Agarwal, a student of Sishu Sarothi said, “I enjoy colouring diyas. I like to colour diyas. Diwali festival is the festival of light. We should not burst cracker because it is harmful for the people and environment. We should enjoy Diwali with earthen lamp,”.
Shishu Sarothi has been working for persons with disabilities since 1987, the vocational unit was set up for students with developmental disabilities, past the age of 18 years with a view to teaching them paper craft work- bag making, folding, printing, screen printing- costume jewellery, beading, painting cards and diyas gardening and nursery skills, computer training in a sheltered workshop like setting.
There are more than 30 adults with disabilities enrolled at the vocational unit in the Shishu Sarothi School.
