Guwahati, Jan 6: Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) has made significant strides in curbing crime in the state, with its success rate skyrocketing due to decisive actions against criminals.
In 2023-2024, the STF executed 254 successful operations, a remarkable increase from just 111 between October 2008 and February 2023. Arrests have also surged, with 482 individuals apprehended in the recent period—more than quadrupling previous numbers.
The STF’s accomplishments from March 2023 to December 2024 have notably outpaced those from its earlier operations, with a significant increase in both the number of operations and their success rate.
Special DGP Harmeet Singh credited the success to the revival of the STF under the guidance of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, with DGP GP Singh and Inspector General Partha Sarathi Mahanta playing crucial roles. “The STF’s main objective is to ensure the safety of Assam’s people and address large-scale crime, both nationally and internationally,” Singh said.
As part of ongoing efforts to secure Guwahati city, the STF carried out 152 operations between March 2023 and December 2024. These operations led to the seizure of over 13 kg of heroin, nearly 4,000 kg of ganja, and thousands of psychotropic tablets, demonstrating the STF’s unwavering commitment to tackling illegal activities.
The STF also expanded its focus to include counter-terrorism efforts, arresting 21 extremists, including members of ISIS, ULFA, and Maoist groups, between March 2023 and December 2024. This marks a stark contrast to the absence of such arrests before March 2023.
Significant progress was also made in tackling wildlife smuggling, counterfeit currency, and gold smuggling. The STF recovered ivory, rhino horns, and over 20 kg of fake gold, along with Rs. 63.88 lakh in cash.
The illegal trade of Burmese Supari and tobacco products was also addressed, with the STF seizing over 57,000 kg of supari, and 2.2 lakh packets of tobacco, and imposing a tax penalty of Rs. 5.71 crore.
In operations targeting illegal infiltration, the STF arrested 18 individuals, including infiltrators and touts from Bangladesh and Myanmar. Special DGP Singh emphasized, “All anti-national intrusions, whether in Kashmir, Punjab, or elsewhere in India, will come from our neighbouring countries. Those looking to harm India will cross the border.”
