Tinsukia, June 27: An Assam police sub-inspector has been suspended after a video of him went viral on social media for assaulting a youth on the street.
The sub-inspector has been identified as Pranjal Phukan. He was posted in Lekhapani police station of eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district.
According to reports, Phukan allegedly thrashed a youth by forcibly entering inside a car and also threatened the youth in the name of police department.
“Phukan was not in uniform and was accompanied by two others, who addressed themselves as police. They stopped the vehicle and assaulted the youth, who is a student, physically,” the victim’s family members told in their report.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family members have lodged an FIR against the SI and two other constables and senior cops.
After the video went viral on social media, the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of Assam police responded to the post and asked Tinsukia Police to intervene. The Director General of Police (DGP), Gyanendra Pratap Singh on Thursday afternoon issued an order to suspend the police personnel involved in this alleged incident. He said the Assam Police department doesn’t allow unlawful use of force on civilians by any of the police personnel. “As police personnel all of us have to show higher degree of restraint even under provocation, if any,” he said.
The superintendent of police (SP), Tinsukia, Gaurav Avijit Dilip said that along with SI Pranjal Phukan, two constables of 2nd Assam Police Battalion have been suspended from their posts. “We have recorded statements of both the sides and further investigation is going on,” he said.
