Dibrugarh, April 21: A suspected goat thief died and another was critically injured in a mob attack at Hatigarh Bokpara Division of Bokul Tea Estate in Dibrugarh on Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 10:30 AM when two individuals allegedly attempted to steal goats in the area. “In the early hours, two suspected goat thieves arrived on a scooter and were caught red-handed by local residents. The enraged crowd allegedly assaulted the duo and set their scooter on fire,” a police official said.

One of the accused died at the scene due to the severe beating. His identity is yet to be confirmed. The other suspect, identified as Jyotirmoy Hazarika of Boiragimoth, was critically injured and is currently undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH).
Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Bikram Kairi, Superintendent of Police Rakesh Reddy, and other senior officials visited the site and are monitoring the situation closely. Security has been tightened in the area to prevent further unrest.
“Two people were attacked on suspicion of goat theft. One died as a result of the assault. The deceased has not been identified yet. No one is above the law—those involved in this mob attack will face strong legal action,” said SP Rakesh Reddy.
Police have launched an investigation and appealed to the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
