Guwahati, May 10: Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday announced a suspension of all ceremonious and public government events until the situation normalizes.
Addressing reporters, Sarma said, “No minister or government officer will travel abroad at the government’s expense during the ongoing tension. The state government will not organize any major public meetings or make significant purchases using public funds.”
He further added that government campaigns and advertisements will be restricted. “There will be no promotional campaigns. All government advertisements will solely focus on nationalism,” Sarma stated. However, he clarified that government employee leaves would not be cancelled at this stage.

In preparation for possible emergencies, Sarma said a voluntary blood donor registry will be compiled, especially focusing on rare blood groups. “Hospitals will be prepared for any emergency, and a proper audit of facilities will be undertaken. The Northeast has significant army infrastructure, and the state will support the armed forces in ensuring smooth troop movements,” he said.
The Chief Minister also highlighted plans to raise awareness among civilians living near Army and Air Force installations about civil defence. “Every armed forces personnel from Assam will have a dedicated district-level support group to assist their families. This will ensure that our soldiers can serve without distractions,” he noted.
Additionally, Sarma mentioned a logistical shift in ration distribution. “Usually, we receive monthly rice allocations from the Centre. But due to the current situation, the Centre has decided to send Public Distribution System (PDS) rice for three months per family in one go, to reduce logistical pressure.”
