Dibrugarh, Jan 30: Luxmi Tea a tea major is embarking on a transformative journey with its ambitious tea tourism project at Lepetkatta Tea Estate in Dibrugarh district. The initiative promises not only to uphold the estate’s tea-producing legacy but also to elevate the local community through education, employment, and sustainable development.
The comprehensive project offers a blend of lifestyle, educational, and cultural infrastructure designed to foster holistic growth. The Institutional Zone will feature schools, colleges, and skill centres, empowering young minds with education and vocational training. Meanwhile, the public-semi public and social Infrastructure will house art galleries, hospitals, a tea convention centre, and art theatres, enriching the region’s social fabric.
For leisure and hospitality enthusiasts, luxury hotels, resorts, and wellness centres will provide relaxation opportunities, while the Eco-Tourism sector will promote sustainable travel through agricultural and aquaculture experiences in traditional-style accommodations.
“Tea tourism offers a range of employment opportunities for the children and youths of tea estates,” shared a Luxmi Tea official. “Jobs as hospitality staff, guides, drivers, and homestay hosts are just a few examples. Moreover, the project will generate roles in healthcare, teaching, and administrative functions. Skill development initiatives will equip the local youth with expertise in hospitality, guiding, languages, and customer service, creating pathways to diverse career opportunities.”
The official emphasized that the development would not compromise the productive capacity of the tea estate but rather enhance it, ensuring sustained prosperity for workers.
The initiative has sparked optimism among workers and community members. Johan Tanti, a dedicated worker at Lepetkatta, expressed his renewed hope for the future. Having faced limitations due to a lack of education and skills, Johan now dreams of his children thriving as skilled professionals in hospitality and tourism.
“My children are excited about the possibilities this project brings,” said Johan. “They want to dream big and build meaningful careers.”
Amit Karmakar, the Boyle Division Sardar, shared his enthusiasm, highlighting the project’s potential to transform the younger generation’s aspirations into reality. Similarly, Lakshmi Nayek, another worker, envisions a brighter future where her children, equipped with proper skill training, can find stable employment in the hospitality sector.
The development at Lepetkatta is expected to significantly uplift the economic scenario of both the estate and surrounding areas. Local shops are anticipated to flourish, and employment rates for youths could reach up to 80%, as per project estimates.
Drawing inspiration from Makaibari Tea Estate in Darjeeling, known for its successful integration of sustainable tourism and community empowerment, Lepetkatta aims to replicate and adapt these principles for lasting impact. Makaibari’s thriving tourism infrastructure has fostered entrepreneurship and economic resilience, a model Lepetkatta aspires to emulate.
Sunil Munshi, Director of Luxmi Tea Company Pvt. Ltd., announced an initial investment of Rs 300 crore for the project’s first phase. “We plan to set up a vocational training centre at the tea estate to impart skills training to local youths,” Munshi said, emphasizing the company’s commitment to sustainable development and community upliftment.
