Assam: Tension in Mazbat as houses of accused in minor’s rape set ablaze

Guwahati, June 24: Section 144 of CRPC has been clamped in the entire Mazbat town after an irate mob burnt down two houses of two rape accused following the gangrape of a 16-year-old girl in the Udalguri district under Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) on Monday.

The incident has forced the Udalguri district administration to clamp Section 144 of CrPC prohibiting the assembly of five or more persons in public places.

Following the gangrape of a minor girl at Dhunsuri Tea Estate under Mazbat police station on June 22, 2024, the police arrested five accused from Dhekuajuali and Mazbat. The five accused have been identified as Mustaq Ahmed, Mohidul Islam, Hafizul Ali, Saddam Ali and Ehsan Ahmed. The police have registered the case vide Mazbat PS case number 30/24 under relevant provisions of IPC against the five accused.

The mob which was demanding exemplary punishment of the rape accused, set ablaze the houses of Mahidul Islam and Hafizul Ali.

However, the situation was brought under control due to the timely intervention of the police.

“There was a law and order problem. But we brought it under control immediately,” Udalguri superintendent of police (SP) Pushkin Jain said.

The minor girl who was accompanied by her friend was coerced by the gang of five youths and was allegedly raped in a nearby secluded area.

The incident came to light after the family members complained to Mazbat police station on Sunday.

Following the incident, a large crowd of Various organisations including AASAA, AASU, AAGSU, Assam Gorkha Sanmilani and AABYSF staged a protest in front of the Mazbat revenue circle office demanding exemplary punishment of the rape accused.

An agitated mob also vandalised the house of the accused and set it to fire, following which firefight teams immediately doused the fire and the police team controlled the situation.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation and are committed to ensuring that justice is served,” Jain said.

The SP also urged the people not to take the law into their own hands and to maintain the law and order. The SP also appealed to the citizens to come forward and assist in the investigation.

The victim girl is currently being treated, and she will be supported by necessary legal, medical and psychological assistance as per provisions of the law.

“We are saddened at the incident. The criminals should be dealt with under the strict provisions of the law. We want their hanging,” said a leader of AAGSU, which is spearheading the protest.

“Such incident has no place in a civilized society. It has lowered the status of women. The safety and security of women is now questioned,” he added.
