Guwahati, May 2: In a tragic road accident late last night, a bus traveling from Guwahati to Tripura overturned near Ditokcherra in Dima Hasaon, resulting in one death and injuries to over 30 passengers.
The deceased has been identified as Devaraj Debbarman from Tripura’s Dholai district. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot before medical help could arrive.
According to the Dima Hasao SP Mayank Kumar, the bus driver lost control while taking a turn at high speed, causing the vehicle to overturn. Six passengers were critically injured and rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). One of them is being shifted to Guwahati for further treatment due to severe injuries.
The bus, bearing registration AS-01-NC-0243, was traveling via Haflong as the Meghalaya route was closed. Heavy rains have deteriorated the road conditions in the region, which often experiences landslides.
While some injured passengers were admitted to local hospitals, others with non-critical injuries received treatment on-site with the help of local residents who rushed to assist in the rescue efforts.
Devaraj Debvarma, who hailed from the Maharani area of Kamampur in South Tripura district, was married four months ago. He was preparing for government jobs. He was on the way to sit for the Tripura Cooperative Bank exam. The news of Devaraj’s untimely death has left his family in profound grief.
